5 Comfortable Sleeping Positions to Help Relieve Back Pain

Back pain is a common condition among working adults, often caused by behaviors such as sitting in front of a computer for long periods or sitting in an improper posture. However, did you know that another important cause of back pain is sleeping in the wrong position?

Since we spend more than 6–8 hours sleeping each day, choosing the right sleeping posture can help reduce back pain as well. Let’s take a look at which sleeping positions can help relieve back pain.

Sleeping on your back with a pillow placed under your knees

This position is suitable for people who have mild back pain or those who want to help prevent back pain. To sleep in this position, lie on your back as usual and place another pillow—one that is not too high or too low—under your knees. This helps maintain the natural curve of the spine and reduces pressure on the lower back.

Sleeping on your left side

The next position that can help reduce back pain is sleeping on the left side. This position may also help improve blood circulation. When sleeping in this posture, it is recommended to hug a body pillow or place the right leg over a pillow to prevent numbness in the legs.

However, this sleeping position may make the heart work slightly harder, so it may not be suitable for people with lung conditions.

Starfish sleeping position

The third position is the Starfish position. This sleeping posture is simple: lie on your back and place your arms above your head, spreading both your arms and legs out, similar to the shape of a starfish.

This position helps support the spine because the back remains flat and well-supported throughout sleep.

Sleeping on your stomach (prone position)

The last position recommended for back pain is sleeping on your stomach. In this position, lie face down as usual and place a pillow that is not too high under the lower abdomen extending to the hips. You should also use a pillow to support your head to prevent neck pain.

Although this position may help reduce back pain, it should not be done too frequently and is best used only occasionally. In addition, you should avoid pressing your face directly into thepillow , as it may make breathing difficult.

If we choose the most suitable sleeping position and the one we feel most comfortable with, it can certainly help reduce back pain. However, it is also important to be mindful of our daily habits and body posture, such as the way we walk or sit while working.
