What is latex? Latex Pillow Latex mattresses, toys, and many other items.
All of these items are made from rubber, which has special properties. It is more elastic than many other materials, has a dense structure, and is highly water-resistant. Because of these qualities, it has become very popular for manufacturing various products. The rubber used to produce these items comes from a large tree known as thePara rubber tree(Hevea brasiliensis)
Introduction to the Para rubber tree
Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) The rubber tree is classified as a large perennial tree. Originally, it is native to South America, particularly the Amazon River Basin in Brazil. It can be propagated by seeds or budding (grafting).
If grown from seeds, the tree tends to have a conical shape, whereas trees propagated by budding usually have a cylindrical form. The tree can reach a height of about 30–40 meters and is known as the plant that produces the highest yield of natural rubber. Its young trees also grow much faster than many other plant species.
About 100 years ago, Para rubber tree were introduced and cultivated in Asia and Africa. It was later found that they grow particularly well in the southern and eastern regions of Thailand.
Once the Para rubber tree have fully matured, farmers harvest the latex and process it into rubber sheets, which are then supplied to factories for the production of various rubber products.
Properties of Natural Latex
The properties of natural Latex are numerous and superior to many other types of latex. One of its most notable characteristics is its excellent elasticity. Natural latex can stretch very well, and even when it is stretched to its limit and nearly breaks, it can return to its original shape once the tension is released. It maintains the same form as before being stretched. Even when exposed to cold temperatures, it can still stretch and contract normally without losing its quality.
On certain surfaces, natural latex can adhere well to objects, such as paper. In addition, natural latex has inherent stickiness, making it suitable for use as a component in adhesives and waterproof materials. When it undergoes certain chemical reactions, it can also be used to produce plastics that are widely used today.
Steps in Harvesting Latex from Rubber Trees
To extract latex from a Para rubber tree, the tree must be tapped. The tapping is usually done diagonally on the trunk so that the latex can flow down along the cut into a collecting container. All the collected latex is then poured into a larger storage tank.
If the latex needs to be preserved for a longer period, it should be smoked to prevent it from spoiling. In the smoking process, the latex collected from the containers is first left to settle. After that, an anti-oxidation agent (Oxidyne) is added to prevent oxidation and help maintain the rubber’s color.
Next, 2% formic acid is added to prevent foaming. If foam appears, it should be removed immediately. When the latex begins to coagulate and become sticky, it is then pressed into sheets, washed, and dried in sequence.
Finally, the latex sheets undergo another smoking process to reduce moisture. This is done at a temperature of 55–60 °C for about 4 days, completing the process.
Although synthetic rubber has been developed today to replace natural latex due to the increasing demand that exceeds the supply from rubber trees, it still cannot fully replace the properties of natural latex. In addition, synthetic latex often has higher production costs.
This clearly shows that rubber trees are extremely important in the industrial sector. Not only can natural latex be used to produce a wide variety of products, but it also has relatively low production costs.
Due to these properties,top-quality mattress brands have chosen to use natural latexas a key component in their mattress production. Latex mattresses provide excellent sleep quality, helping prevent back pain, not sagging too much, and offering long-lasting durability. They are a worthwhile investment.
